SUMMARY:Cooperative Management of Protected Areas and National Park - Case study: Healing Island\, Yeongsando
DESCRIPTION:Most of the national parks in South Korea have beautiful natural ecosystems and are preserved in farming and fishing villages. In these villages\, most of the local residents living there are aging\, and labor production is gradually decreasing\, requiring new alternatives to revitalize these village communities. Under these circumstances\, the Korean National Park Service has worked on a big project developing the “luxury village” as an alternative to raise both the income of residents and the value of national parks. Working to utilize well-preserved ecosystems and landscapes along with cultural resources is the overall approach being utilized and a total of seventeen of these villages have been built so far. The first was the luxury village of Dadohae Haesang Marine National Park in 2010. The most successful case of a “luxury village” has been the “Yeongsando Luxury Village.” The strategies that have enabled successful cooperation between national parks and local residents and helped to transform this location into a sustainable tourism destination are examined in further detail. \nLed by: Dr. Soyoung An

SUMMARY:Inspire Healing through Art\, Painting a Dot Mandala
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for a dynamic group discussion regarding the power of healing through art. We will be painting a dot mandala\, created with various tools we have in our home\, no brushes will be used. Mandalas are a universal icon of strong spiritual connection in the Buddhist and Hindu religion. The word mandala means circle in Sanskrit. The circle is completed with repetitive designs which creates a meditative state in our minds. Have you ever thought about the psychological impact of color we surround ourselves with in our homes\, our clothes\, even our cars? We will discuss color choices. Lines are the first and most basic component of artwork. Does a straight line invoke a different emotion than a curved line? Come enjoy a quick art class and feel the healing! No previous art experience is needed. \nSupply list: \nAll of these items can be purchased at Michaels\, Hobby Lobby or the Dollar Tree. \n6″ x 6″ canvas panel \nAcrylic paints-Black\, White\, Green and Red\, or colors of your choice. \nCraft Glitter Paints to coordinate with your color choices. (Optional) \nWhite chalk or watercolor pencil Ruler Bubble palette or styrofoam plate Primary pencil (We will use the eraser end so it must to a new eraser.) \nStandard pencil (We will use the eraser end so it must to a new eraser.) \nLollipop stick Toothpicks or a Stylus\, a dotting tool. \nPaper towels. \nQ-tips Prior to class\, paint your canvas with two coats of black acrylic paint. \nAllow this to dry and cure overnight. \nUsing a ruler/t-square and your white pencil create a plus sign on your canvas making a horizontal and vertical line at halfway point. \nThen create a giant “X” from the upper left corner to the bottom right corner and another line from the upper right corner to the bottom left corner. \nThe X lines should intersect perfectly with the center of the plus sign. \n  \nLed by: Ms. Susan Shaffer
