SUMMARY:Inspire Healing through Art\, Painting a Dot Mandala
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for a dynamic group discussion regarding the power of healing through art. We will be painting a dot mandala\, created with various tools we have in our home\, no brushes will be used. Mandalas are a universal icon of strong spiritual connection in the Buddhist and Hindu religion. The word mandala means circle in Sanskrit. The circle is completed with repetitive designs which creates a meditative state in our minds. Have you ever thought about the psychological impact of color we surround ourselves with in our homes\, our clothes\, even our cars? We will discuss color choices. Lines are the first and most basic component of artwork. Does a straight line invoke a different emotion than a curved line? Come enjoy a quick art class and feel the healing! No previous art experience is needed. \nSupply list: \nAll of these items can be purchased at Michaels\, Hobby Lobby or the Dollar Tree. \n6″ x 6″ canvas panel \nAcrylic paints-Black\, White\, Green and Red\, or colors of your choice. \nCraft Glitter Paints to coordinate with your color choices. (Optional) \nWhite chalk or watercolor pencil Ruler Bubble palette or styrofoam plate Primary pencil (We will use the eraser end so it must to a new eraser.) \nStandard pencil (We will use the eraser end so it must to a new eraser.) \nLollipop stick Toothpicks or a Stylus\, a dotting tool. \nPaper towels. \nQ-tips Prior to class\, paint your canvas with two coats of black acrylic paint. \nAllow this to dry and cure overnight. \nUsing a ruler/t-square and your white pencil create a plus sign on your canvas making a horizontal and vertical line at halfway point. \nThen create a giant “X” from the upper left corner to the bottom right corner and another line from the upper right corner to the bottom left corner. \nThe X lines should intersect perfectly with the center of the plus sign. \n  \nLed by: Ms. Susan Shaffer

SUMMARY:Cooperative Management of Protected Areas and National Park - Case study: Healing Island\, Yeongsando
DESCRIPTION:Most of the national parks in South Korea have beautiful natural ecosystems and are preserved in farming and fishing villages. In these villages\, most of the local residents living there are aging\, and labor production is gradually decreasing\, requiring new alternatives to revitalize these village communities. Under these circumstances\, the Korean National Park Service has worked on a big project developing the “luxury village” as an alternative to raise both the income of residents and the value of national parks. Working to utilize well-preserved ecosystems and landscapes along with cultural resources is the overall approach being utilized and a total of seventeen of these villages have been built so far. The first was the luxury village of Dadohae Haesang Marine National Park in 2010. The most successful case of a “luxury village” has been the “Yeongsando Luxury Village.” The strategies that have enabled successful cooperation between national parks and local residents and helped to transform this location into a sustainable tourism destination are examined in further detail. \nLed by: Dr. Soyoung An

SUMMARY:Transdisciplinary Collaborations in Neuroscience\, Art and Related Therapeutics
DESCRIPTION:Transdisciplinary collaboration is the future of knowledge-making in advanced post-industrial societies\, and there is a growing awareness that the most vexing problems we face cannot be solved by any single discipline. Current best practices for complex and challenging physical and mental disorders require a multi-disciplinary approach\, yet there remains a void in bridging the gap between the most contemporary models. The profession of art therapy embraces the variances of subjective artistic expression and its value in representing more completely the psyche of the individual\, while neuroscientists typically strive for precise data acquisition in advancing the understanding of brain structures and functions. This talk is about the collaboration between neuroscience\, art\, and therapeutics\, with a focus on how cognitive neuroscience informs art therapy theory\, applications\, and research for people who endure psychological stress and trauma. \n  \nLed by: Professor Juliet King

SUMMARY:A Passion for Innovation: How a Product Inventor Found Herself in Medical School
DESCRIPTION:I want you to imagine being on every news channel in Detroit and featured in Inventor’s Digest Magazine with the none other than the inventor of the Dyson vacuum cleaner. I’m the inventor of 5 consumer goods. I hold patents\, and I have a passion for innovation. When products don’t work\, I can usually tell you why. But suddenly my world came to a halt with cancer holding up a STOP sign. My mom had been diagnosed with an aggressive gallbladder cancer which led me to 3 years of research\, (most nights I would stay up until dawn). I presented my findings to a prominent surgeon at the University of Michigan who said\, “you are on to something\, Josephine.” And wrote me a letter of recommendation to GW medical school. Come see how an inventor like me pivoted to translational science and how I won’t take “no” for an answer. \n  \nLed by: Prof. Josephine Fermanian
