GW October Entrepreneurship Week
Integrating every corner of the university for the purpose of solving real world problems and creating positive change.

At George Washington University, our expansive and numerous entrepreneurship-related programs make us fortunate to have a wide variety of opportunities to foster collaboration and innovation, and it is from these that we are able to envision one central event: an annual GW Entrepreneurship Week.

GW Entrepreneurship Week fosters collaboration with and innovation around people, connections, and ideas in one collective and cohesive week-long event. Together, in one virtual space, we have the opportunity to create expansive change within and throughout the university and our surrounding community. This year the week’s theme is resiliency. Being celebrated in a strategic moment in time, post-corona and after a couple months of schools reopening, we have the unbelievable opportunity to come together to share and learn the ways that we can be more resilient. Resiliency in an entrepreneurial mindset and practice has the power to dictate a surviving organization or firm from a failing one. During Entrepreneurship Week, we will be joined by top entrepreneurship leaders from all over GW’s campus the way we can embody a heightened level of resilience moving forward.

The GW Entrepreneurship Week is the “destination event” for established entrepreneurs and others interested in entrepreneurship for the region.

GW has established itself as a leader in entrepreneurial study and practice, and therefore, we want to build upon this reputation in this week-long event which will work to increase awareness and opportunities in education, actionable change, and funding for members of the GW community. This program will work to  drive entrepreneurial behaviors throughout GW so as to create measurable results for the community. In stimulating engagement and collaboration during the week in an environment that promotes a diversity of thought and perspective, while providing networking opportunities as well as idea generation for interested participants, the week will build excitement about the Global Entrepreneurship Week that occurs annually in November. In leveraging popularity of existing programs and events, and working with the Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence, ICSB, the GW Global Entrepreneurship & Research Conference, GWU Entrepreneurship Week provides an opportunity for those from interested parties, from many disciplines both throughout GWU and within the local and regional community, to come together in time and space; for a much anticipated and comprehensive experience which does not yet exist. As participants gather for these events, GW Entrepreneurship Week will enhance the spark between the participants and meaningful actions for the community and beyond.

How you and your team can participate

Working off a new model of thinking that prioritizes resilience in and out of the workplace, we are excited to invite you to participate in Entrepreneurship Week. We have 1-hr webinar openings from Monday, October 26th to Friday, October 30th, however not on Thursday, October 29th as we will be hosting the full day, GW October conference then.

We would love to hear your ideas for hosting lectures and workshops. Please fill out this google form to share your ideas with us! If you need help brainstorming, we are happy to assist with that as well. Resiliency is a multi-faceted notion that plays into many parts of entrepreneurship, specifically in the design, construction, and growth of an enterprise or organization.

*Please note that entrepreneurship week will be completely virtual this year.

The Week

Given the wide range of resources that may be available, we can imagine an event possibly including but not limited to, keynote speakers, moderated panel discussions, mentoring and networking events, competitions, and workshops, and honors/awards. We envision a robust social media component to drive awareness and education, possibly with the help of student, faculty, and community influencers. Our event will be directed by the current interests of our audience, and appeal to a wide range of participants from each school within the university, and from the public and private sectors. Because we happen to reside in the epicenter of policy creation in a city that also struggles with significant economic and social challenges, GW’s Entrepreneurship Week would be positioned to act as an incubator for dialogue and positive impact.

Project Summary

GW strives to create an environment where entrepreneurship flourishes. In order to focus these efforts, a weeklong annual event has been conceived and is proposed for October 2020. It acts as a touchpoint and destination for all who are interested in entrepreneurial activities, and provide training, collaboration, and inspiration for those who may not yet see themselves as entrepreneurs. By offering a wide variety of events, GW’s annual Entrepreneurship Week serves to create a space that combines the numerous sectors of the university and community, increasing the reach and scope of entrepreneurship at all levels. Not only is this event well-aligned with the strategy and values of GWU, but it also enables GW to further position themselves as a beacon for innovative ideas and attract those who possess a passion for creating value for their industries, their communities, and the world.

This week’s impact on the culture of the institution, as well as the degree to which interdisciplinary alliances have formed, should not be underestimated. Using entrepreneurship as a bridge, the ultimate plan is to bring our entire GW family together with the community through the means of synergy and hope of further advancement. By encouraging GW’s seven values of integrity, collaboration, respect, excellence, openness, diversity, and courage to flourish in this new space, meaningful and exciting entrepreneurial activities are sure to follow.
